As we’ve seen by now, the Asian Sports guy has the NFL weekly previews on lock, providing you plenty of great insight and predictions for the pro game, so I’ll be riding shotty this season (as I have been known to do) and providing my thoughts on the college football scene across the nation. It’s Week 3 of the college football season and it’s time to start a weekly preview and picks piece. I’ll try to pick games from a variety of BCS conferences, with some mid-major and FCS games sprinkled in there, as well. For this first week, I’ll pick these games “straight up” and not involve the spread.
Week 3 Picks
(SEC) The College GameDay game of the week: #18 Florida at # 23 Tennessee (line: UT -2):
Lee Corso and the gang will be live Saturday morning from Knoxville, Tennessee. Arguably one of the greatest college football atmospheres in the nation will feature two storied programs from the toughest conference in football. These two SEC-East rivals meet as ranked teams for the first for the first time in five years. Whew!…can’t get much better than that. This off-season the Vols lost their defensive coordinator and one of their best recruiters, in Justin Wilcox (to Washington..go Dawgs!). I see the home-field advantage a large factor in the -2 line for Tenn. I see this as a close one, so I’ll look for the higher ranked Florida to pick up a win on the road over the Vols. Calling it…Gators 20 to 16.
(Pac-12) #2 USC vs. #21 Stanford (line: USC -9):
While USC might not have dominated Syracuse as much as it should have, this first Pac-12 conference matchup of the year will prove to be a good one. USC’s air assault led by Heisman hopeful and likely future overall #1 NFL draft pick, Matt Barkley will be pitted against the very good running attack of Stefan Taylor and Stanford. This game also features my two most potent offensive threats on my Pac-12 only fantasy football team (Barkley and Taylor). Stanford gives USC a game, but the several big-play threats for the Trojans just prove to be too much for the Cardinal. Calling it….Trojans 31 to 17.
(Big 10/Independent) #20 Notre Dame vs. #10 Michigan State (Line Michigan State -3.5):
The Irish were tested earlier than anticipated in their tough schedule. They won in a close game vs. Purdue last week. Michigan State will outlast the Irish. Calling it…. Michigan State 27 to 17.
UPSET SPECIAL: Arizona State vs. Missouri (Line: Missouri -5):
Missouri gave the Georgia bulldogs a run for their money for most of their first SEC conference game, but ended up coming up short. The Sun Devils pulled off a solid upset last week defeating Illinois 45-14. So for my upset special, I’m calling… Arizona State to come up with another upset and shock Mizzouri 34 to 28.
Update: Kirk Herbstreit from College Gameday co-signs my upset special pick of ASU over Mizzou!
